How We Design Your Bespoke Lighting: From Sketch to Installation
Every piece of MooBoo lighting starts long before we step into the workshop.
It starts with a conversation, a set of measurements — and a pencil.
Designing bespoke lighting isn’t just about choosing something that looks good. It’s about creating a piece that fits your space perfectly, both visually and practically.
Here’s how we do it.
It Starts With Your Space
Every design begins with understanding your room.
We’ll usually ask for:
- Ceiling height
- Room dimensions
- Table or island size
- Photos or plans (if you have them)
This gives us the foundation to design something that feels balanced and intentional — not just “hung from the ceiling”.

Step 1: Hand-Drawn Scale Sketches
Before anything is made, we draw your lighting by hand.
Working from your measurements, we create a scale sketch that maps out:
- Timber length
- Fixing points
- Chain or cable positions
- Hanging height and drop
This is one of the most important parts of the process.
It allows us to:
- Get the proportions just right
- Make sure the fixture works in your space
- Give you a clear visual of the final piece
For us, this is where the design really comes to life.
It’s also part of what makes MooBoo different — every piece is considered, not generated.
Why We Still Draw by Hand
We can create digital previews — and sometimes we do.
But we always start with a hand drawing.
There’s something honest about pencil and paper. It allows us to think through the design in a tactile, human way — refining proportions and details in real time.
For many of our clients, this step builds confidence. It shows exactly how your lighting will work, without feeling overly technical or impersonal.
It’s design as part of the craft.
Step 2: Technical Planning
Once the design is agreed, we move into the technical detail.
This includes:
- Timber selection and sizing
- Structural fixing points
- Weight distribution (especially for larger pieces)
- Cable lengths and spacing
- Lamp holder positions
Everything is carefully considered to ensure your lighting is not just beautiful, but safe, practical and built to last.
👉 Choosing the right size matters too:

Step 3: Optional Pre-Visualisation
If needed, we can create an AI-assisted visual to show how your lighting might look in your space.
This can be helpful for:
- Larger or more complex designs
- Open-plan spaces
- Statement stairwells
But for us, this is a supporting step — not the starting point.
The hand-drawn design always comes first.
Step 4: Crafting Your Lighting in Our Devon Workshop
Once everything is agreed, your lighting moves into production.
Each piece is:
- Handcrafted in our Devon studio
- Made using reclaimed or carefully selected timber
- Assembled using high-quality components
We don’t mass produce. Every fixture is made to order, with care and attention at every stage.
Step 5: Installation Made Simple
We design our lighting to be as straightforward as possible to install.
For many projects, we offer an advance wiring kit, allowing your electrician to:
- Install and sign off wiring early
- Prepare fixing points
- Avoid delays later on
When your fixture arrives, it’s ready to hang and connect — no guesswork, just a smooth final step.
To make things even easier, we’ve created step-by-step installation videos to guide you (or your electrician) through the process:
This is one of several guides we’ve created to support you at every stage, helping ensure your lighting is installed safely, securely and exactly as designed.
Designed Around You
No two homes are the same — and your lighting shouldn’t be either.
By combining hand-drawn design, technical planning and craftsmanship, we create lighting that:
- Fits your space perfectly
- Reflects your style
- Works beautifully in everyday life
