Oak beam chandelier over a dining table with murano glass shades

Real Home : Multi Fixture Lighting Design

Perfect lighting in every room

This stunning home in Torbay has had a massive renovation and extended building works. Transformed from two terrace houses into one spectacular building with annex, it is now a gorgeous family home.

Owners Steve and Heidi asked us to design lighting for the open plan living space, and we made our first visit to the house in the Spring of 2024. Even though it was a newly plastered shell, we could see the potential of the space and quickly came up with a cohesive lighting design for the ground floor.

We didn’t want everything to match perfectly, preferring to reflect their eclectic interior style, so we matched elements from each piece and utilised Murano glass shades that Steve and Heidi had already bought. Using oak from the Plymouth Dry Docks for the triple chandelier over the dining table and the bespoke wall light, and then matching sage green cable and old English brass fittings throughout, we built a cohesive lighting design that retained unique qualities in each fixture. The stunning Murano glass shades absolutely had to be part of the design they were a perfect fit for the oak over the dining table.

The vaulted ceiling in the kitchen deserved something spectacular and unique that would fill the space, and so we went for an oak whiskey barrel cascade chandelier and added extra drama with our large pumpkin cages - which throw incredible shadows across the ceiling after dark. Practically, the task lighting in the space is through the recessed spot lights, but the drama and ambience comes from our fixtures. Each fitting is on a dimmer and so Steve and Heidi can set the mood however they wish.

Steve is a huge fan of Les Miserables and asked us to design a wall light featuring lyrics from ‘Master of the House’ (it’s not a reflection on the quality of food served at their Sunday dinner)! As we wanted to match certain elements of the design this is where a large plank of Plymouth oak came into its own. Matching the triple chandelier, but also keeping its original notches and splits, it sits perfectly over the window and the two sconce lights add extra warmth to the space. The vinyl transfer of the lyrics in the famous Les Mis font was expertly printed and transferred onto the oak by Dean at Riviera Signs.

Steve and Heidi love a vintage market and one day whilst hunting for coffee and cake happened across some gorgeous metal shades and asked us to transform them into pendants for use in the living rooms and hallways. The shades were in a battered state, however we decided not to restore them but instead celebrate their unique patina and rustic qualities and match the cable and components with the rest of the design scheme in the home.

In the annex, the vaulted ceiling has a triple Kinna Pendant. The annex is sleek and modern snd so they chose grey twist cable and modern style brushed titanium lamp holders for the pendant.

In this home we used sage green cotton twist cables and old English brass lamp holders, chains, cages and hooks. The oak was from the dry docks in Plymouth and the reclaimed oak wine barrel lid was printed with Justerini and Brooks, a fine wine merchant with the Royal seal of approval.

Your Interior Lighting Design

Having a cohesive lighting design throughout your home isn't as expensive as you may think, and can be accomplished in stages, room by room. We will talk to you about practicality as well as ambience, take into consideration your home style and existing furnishings. We can incorporate fixtures or items that you already have, sometimes simply re -wiring existing fixtures with new cables and components can make all the difference.

New build homes typically come with a bunch of recessed spotlights and some white plastic pendants with bare bulbs, so for a quick and effective transformation simply changing the pendants for something a little more elegant such as our bespoke pendant lights can make a huge difference.

Lighting is personal and can be transformative, with the right design and colour palette, it can make an average home into a spectacular one.

If you want to discuss your home and how we can help design the perfect interior lighting scheme, drop us a message, we’d love to hear from you.
