What Size Chandelier Do I Need?
Choosing the right chandelier size can completely transform a room — but it’s one of the trickiest decisions to get right.
Too small, and it disappears.
Too large, and it overwhelms the space.
In our Devon workshop, we design bespoke lighting every day, and the key is always the same:
👉 proportion is everything
This guide will help you get it just right.
Quick Chandelier Size Guide (UK Cheat Sheet)
If you want a quick rule of thumb:
- Dining table: ½ to ⅔ the width of the table
- Kitchen island: one long fixture or multiple pendants spaced evenly
- Room size: add room dimensions (in metres) = ideal diameter in cm (approx guide)
- Hallways: keep proportions narrow but impactful
- Stairwells: scale up — this is your statement space

Did you know we hand draw scale sketches for your space before we make your lighting?
Every bespoke piece starts with a pencil and paper. We sketch your fixture to scale, working from your room measurements to make sure proportions, timber length and hanging height are just right.
Here’s a real example from a recent client — helping them visualise exactly how their chandelier would sit in their space before we even pick up the tools.
These drawings are more than just a plan — they’re part of the craft. They allow us to refine the design together and give you confidence that everything will fit perfectly.

Dining Table Chandelier Size
This is where sizing matters most.
👉 Your chandelier should be:
½ to ⅔ the width of your dining table
Example:
- 90cm wide table → 45–60cm wide fixture
- 100cm table → 50–65cm fixture
This keeps everything visually balanced and centred.

Kitchen Island Lighting Size
Kitchen islands offer more flexibility, depending on your layout.
You can choose:
- One long linear chandelier (perfect for a clean, architectural look)
- Two or three pendants spaced evenly
Spacing rule:
👉 Leave roughly 50–70cm between pendants
Our wooden beam chandeliers are ideal here, as they naturally scale with your island length.

Living Rooms & Open Plan Spaces
In larger spaces, your chandelier should feel anchored to the room — not floating or lost.
A simple guide:
👉 Add the room’s length + width (in metres), then convert to cm
Example:
- 4m + 5m room → ~90cm diameter fitting
This isn’t exact, but it gives a great starting point.
Layering is key here — combining ceiling lighting with lamps and wall lights (often called lampscaping) creates depth and flexibility.

Stairwells & Statement Spaces
This is where you can go bold.
Stairwells and voids need scale to:
- Fill vertical space
- Create visual drama
- Balance architecture
Think:
- Multi-drop pendants
- Cluster chandeliers
- Larger, sculptural pieces

Smaller spaces don’t mean boring lighting — just smarter proportions.
Best options:
- Compact chandeliers
- Flush or semi-flush fittings
- Slim linear designs
